Despite the fact that obesity has been shown to increase breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women, the results of a large-scale study conducted by researchers at the North Carolina Lineberger Cancer Center showed that it was reversed for premenopausal women. dana farber cancer institute

Breast cancer is more prevalent among older women and the average age at diagnosis in the United States is 62. Obesity poses a higher risk for breast cancer in women after menopause. dana farber cancer institute

Because breast cancer is less common in young women, researchers collect data on a group of 758,592 women younger than 55 years of age to study breast cancer risk. dana farber cancer institute

Studies usually have fewer premenopausal breast cancers because breast cancer is less common at younger ages and evidence is not as strong as in postmenopausal breast cancer. dana farber cancer institute

The Relationship Between Premenopausal Period Is Going Backward
The researchers saw a trend in cancer risk as the VKI increased in this group. No threshold was found for the higher VKI to have a lower risk of cancer. The greatest risk reduction associated with BMI was between the ages of 18 and 24, during which time there was a 23 percent lower risk of breast cancer due to an increase in every five units in VMI. At the age of 25 to 34, every five unit increase in VKI was associated with a 15 percent lower risk. There was a 13 percent lower risk for BMI between the ages of 35-44 and a 12 percent lower risk for BMI at 45-54 years. dana farber cancer institute

They also observed a lower risk for estrogen or progesterone-receptor-positive breast cancer due to higher body mass index, but did not see a consistent association for triple negative breast cancer or hormone receptor negative breast cancer. dana farber cancer institute

Although the findings are interesting, this study is not a reason to try to gain weight in order to prevent breast cancer. In heavier women, the risk of breast cancer before menopause is lower, but the point to consider is the many benefits of managing a healthy weight. The aim in this study is to try to understand what contributes to the risk of breast cancer in young women. dana farber cancer institute
